NATURE THROUGH JADE SYMPOSIUM

Saturday, 1 September 2007
9.30am - 4.30pm
Domain Theatre, Lower Level 3

in conjunction with the major exhibition Translucent World: Chinese Jade from the Forbidden City.

Throughout history, the Chinese have revered this ‘heavenly stone’, carved to produce the most prized ornaments and ceremonial implements. Worked in a diversity of themes and styles over the millennia, the image of nature has remained a potent source of inspiration for artisans. Focusing on this unique genre and its principal theme of nature, the symposium will provide insight into the history and development of one of China's most vibrant and enduring cultures.

For the first time, the Art Gallery of New South Wales is gathering a number of leading international scholars to explore the importance of jade in Chinese culture. Speakers include Li LIU, La Trobe University; LIU Yang, Art Gallery of New South Wales; Jenny So, Chinese University of Hong Kong; J Keith Wilson from the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M Sackler Gallery, Smithsonian; and jade experts from the Palace Museum, Beijing.
