Experience the rich heritage of Asian art and culture through the themed displays of the New Asian Galleries including faiths of Asia, the arts of Southeast Asia, the Chinese traditions of tomb furnishings, imperial porcelain and the Confucian scholar and in Japan the arts of the samurai, Edo period town culture and contemporary ceramics.

Discussion tours and artist workshops are designed to be suitable for the following New South Wales syllabus areas:
Visual Arts, History, Japanese/Chinese Language, Asian Studies, Studies of Religion

Myriad Visions
Explore the religious and artistic currents including ancestor worship, Hinduism and Buddhism that have moved across Asia over the centuries and continue to find expression in the work of contemporary Asian artists.

Navigating Art - Moving Between Cultures
Visual art represents and reflects a culture and in turn a culture influences and inspires visual art. Explore the Gallery's collection and the relationship between art and cultures over time and history. Uncover the ways art and a particular culture has contributed to Australia.

Teachers may select a cultural focus for Discussion Tours: China, Japan, India or Southeast Asia

Surrounded by the artworks in the Asian Gallery, students are tutored in traditional art by Asian artists.

What happens at an Asian Art Workshop ? >

Creative Calligraphy
Practice styles of writing with brush and ink from ancient pictograms to free-flowing cursive expression.

Spirit of the Brush
Learn the techniques of brush and ink as expressed in Chinese mountain landscapes and Japanese Zen painting.

Taking Tea
Join a Japanese tea ceremony as a guest in the Gallery's Tea Room to experience the customs and aesthetics of art appreciation. (Thursdays only)
